A significant digital talent gap exists, with 59% of companies worldwide needing digital talent but struggling to find it. This gap is causing a significant impact on businesses, with 92% of companies reporting that it affects their productivity, employee satisfaction, and financial performance. Digital skills are in high demand, with 61% of companies seeking digital marketing and social media skills, followed by data analysis and visualisation (45%), and cyber security (44%).
Educational institutions are not meeting the demand for digital skills, with only 12% of companies believing that universities and colleges are adequately preparing students. As a result, companies are looking to other means to fill the gap. Internal training is the most popular solution, with 54% of companies investing in it. Other strategies include hiring from competitors (28%), outsourcing (26%), and public-private partnerships (20%).
Despite the challenges, there are opportunities for companies to gain a competitive edge. Those who can attract, develop, and retain digital talent will be better positioned to succeed in the digital economy. Companies that are digitally mature, with a clear digital strategy, are more likely to attract and retain digital talent. Furthermore, companies that offer flexible working arrangements, continuous learning opportunities, and a positive work culture are more attractive to digital talent.
