O’Reilly also points out that Uber’s model may not be sustainable, as it relies on subsidising rides to undercut traditional taxi services. Once the subsidies end, prices will rise, potentially driving away customers. In contrast, Airbnb’s model is self-sustaining, with hosts setting their own prices and guests choosing based on value and convenience.
O’Reilly concludes that platforms should be designed to serve the people who use them, not just the companies that own them. He believes that the future of the platform economy lies in creating value for everyone involved, not just in dominating the market.
