The Magna Carta, a historic document, has been hailed as the foundation of democracy, human rights, and rule of law. Yet, it is fundamentally a feudal document, protecting the interests of the barons, not the common man. Today’s society, with its complex dynamics, demands an ‘Alternative Magna Carta’, a new charter of rights that reflects the realities of the 21st century.

This alternative charter would include the right to identity, ensuring every person has control over their personal data. It would also guarantee the right to exist, protecting individuals from the existential threats of climate change and nuclear war. The right to justice, ensuring access to affordable legal representation, would also be a vital inclusion.

The right to knowledge would ensure free access to education and information, while the right to work would protect workers from exploitation. A right to wealth would demand a fair share of the fruits of economic growth, and a right to nature would guarantee access to green spaces.

This Alternative Magna Carta would also enshrine the right to resist, allowing citizens to challenge unjust laws and systems. In essence, it would be a charter for the many, not just the few, reflecting the needs and aspirations of a truly democratic society.
