Saul Klein, former Skype executive and co-founder of LoveFilm, has launched Kano, a DIY computer kit for children. Klein’s aim is to demystify technology and encourage children to become creators, not just consumers. Kano’s kits, priced at £99, contain a Raspberry Pi computer, a keyboard, and software for programming games and music. The kit is designed to be assembled by children aged 6 and up.
Klein believes that coding should be considered a basic skill, akin to reading and writing. He sees a future where everyone has a basic understanding of how to code, and where technology is accessible and user-friendly. Klein suggests that the current education system is ill-prepared for the digital age, and that teaching children coding is a step towards bridging this gap.
Klein’s vision extends beyond Kano. He is also a partner at LocalGlobe, a venture capital firm that focuses on early-stage tech start-ups. He believes in supporting entrepreneurs who are trying to solve real-world problems, and sees the potential for technology to transform sectors such as healthcare, education, and finance.
Klein’s ultimate goal is to create a world where technology is not just consumed, but also created and understood by everyone. He sees Kano as a stepping stone towards this goal, and is committed to making technology more accessible to the next generation.
