Agile 2015, a leading industry conference, hosted a session on navigating organisational complexity. The session, facilitated by Jason Little, explored the Cynefin framework, a decision-making tool created by Dave Snowden. This tool helps leaders understand the context of problems and choose an appropriate response.
The Cynefin framework divides problems into five domains: simple, complicated, complex, chaotic, and disorder. Simple problems have known solutions, while complicated ones require expert analysis to identify the best solution. Complex problems don’t have a clear cause-and-effect relationship, making solutions harder to predict. Chaotic problems require immediate action, while the disorder domain is for problems that don’t fit into any other category.
Attendees at the Agile 2015 session participated in interactive exercises to understand the Cynefin framework better. They were tasked with sorting sticky notes with problem statements into the five domains, encouraging group discussion and collaboration. Participants found the exercise insightful and helpful in understanding the practical application of the Cynefin framework.
The session concluded with a discussion on how the Cynefin framework can be used in conjunction with Lean Change Management, an approach that combines Agile, Lean Startup, and Change Management principles. The synergy between these tools can help organisations navigate complexity and change more effectively.
