John Hagel, co-chairman of Deloitte’s Centre for the Edge, suggests that businesses should create “change movements” to adapt to the rapidly evolving economic landscape. In his view, traditional top-down change programmes are insufficient. Instead, businesses need to create a movement that inspires and motivates employees to drive change from within.

Hagel identifies three key elements for a successful change movement. First, a ‘narrative’ that goes beyond a mission statement to tell a story that resonates with employees and customers. Second, a ‘passionate community’ of individuals who are inspired by the narrative and want to be part of the change. Finally, the ‘creation spaces’ where this community can collaborate and innovate.

However, Hagel warns that this process requires patience, as change movements take time to grow and evolve. He also emphasises that these movements should not be seen as a one-off event, but rather as a continuous process of adaptation and evolution. This approach, he believes, will help businesses to navigate the challenges of the 21st-century economy.
