MessageBird, a Dutch communication platform, has secured $60m in a Series A funding round, marking the largest early-stage investment for a European software company. The funding was led by US venture capital firm Accel Partners, with participation from Atomico and Y Combinator. The funds will be used to accelerate MessageBird’s global expansion and product development.
Founded in 2011, MessageBird provides an API for developers to build communication features into their applications. The platform enables businesses to communicate with customers in over 146 countries, via SMS, voice and chat channels. It handles more than 15 billion API requests per month, serving clients such as Uber, DoorDash, and Heineken.
The company, which is profitable and has grown without prior venture capital, has established an impressive global footprint. It supports over a million developers, and has offices in Amsterdam, San Francisco, London, Hamburg, Sydney, Shanghai, and Singapore. The latest funding round will further fuel MessageBird’s ambitions to become a leading global communication platform.
