Microsoft has confirmed plans to acquire GitHub, the world’s leading software development platform, for $7.5 billion in company stock. This strategic move aims to empower developers, accelerate GitHub’s growth and advance Microsoft services with new audiences. GitHub hosts 28 million developers who contribute to 85 million code repositories, making it the largest host of source code globally.
Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, emphasises the importance of developers in the contemporary digital era. With this acquisition, Microsoft aims to strengthen its commitment to developer freedom, openness, and innovation. GitHub will remain an open platform, operating independently to provide an open platform for all developers in all industries.
Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President, Nat Friedman, will become GitHub’s new CEO, while GitHub’s current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will join Microsoft as a technical fellow. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of 2018, subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.
