Fei-Fei Li, a key figure in artificial intelligence (AI) at Stanford University, is building a startup focused on developing spatial intelligence for robots. The startup, called AI4ALL, aims to make robots more useful in everyday environments. Li’s team is developing AI that can understand and navigate the physical world, a concept known as spatial intelligence. This technology could be applied in a variety of sectors, including retail, healthcare, and manufacturing.
Li, who led the creation of ImageNet, a vast visual database that revolutionised machine learning, sees spatial intelligence as the next frontier in AI. The goal is to create robots that can operate safely and efficiently in human environments, performing tasks such as cleaning, maintenance, and caregiving.
AI4ALL is also committed to increasing diversity in AI, training underrepresented groups in the field. Li believes this will help ensure the technology is developed in a way that benefits all of society. The startup has already raised significant funding from investors, including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, demonstrating confidence in its vision and potential.
In addition to her work with AI4ALL, Li continues to lead Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute, promoting the development of AI that respects human values and enhances human capabilities.
