Iberdrola, a Spanish multinational electric company, has developed a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) solution to optimise power grid management. The new AI tool, designed in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will help predict electricity demand and supply, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of power grids.
The AI system, named Grid Predictor, uses machine learning algorithms to forecast energy demand and renewable energy generation. It analyses weather patterns, historical data, and real-time information to make accurate predictions. This predictive capability enables power grid operators to better manage electricity resources, reducing operational costs and carbon emissions.
Grid Predictor also bolsters the integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid. By accurately predicting renewable energy production, it aids in the transition towards a more sustainable energy model.
Iberdrola has already implemented Grid Predictor in its operations in Spain. The company plans to roll out the AI tool in the UK, the US, and Brazil in the near future. The development of Grid Predictor is part of Iberdrola’s commitment to digitalisation and sustainability, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
