A leader’s decision-making process can be enhanced by understanding and applying the Cynefin framework. This framework, developed by cognitive scientists, categorises issues into five domains: simple, complicated, complex, chaotic, and disorder.
In the simple domain, problems are straightforward and solutions are clear. Leaders merely need to categorise and respond. In the complicated domain, expert analysis is required to understand the problem and determine the best course of action.
The complex domain is characterised by unpredictability. Here, leaders need to probe, sense, and then respond, allowing patterns to emerge before taking action. In the chaotic domain, immediate action is required to stabilise the situation.
The fifth domain, disorder, is where uncertainty reigns and it’s unclear which of the other domains apply. Leaders must swiftly identify which domain they’re dealing with to avoid making ill-informed decisions.
The Cynefin framework provides a practical approach to decision-making, helping leaders to comprehend their challenges and respond effectively. It emphasises the importance of context and the need for leaders to adapt their thinking and actions to different situations.
