Lisbon is emerging as a vibrant startup hub in Europe, drawing entrepreneurs with its affordable living costs, talented workforce, and favourable business environment. The Portuguese capital offers a range of support for startups, from co-working spaces and accelerators, to events and networking opportunities. This is fuelled by the government’s commitment to fostering innovation, evidenced by the launch of Startup Portugal, a national strategy to boost the startup ecosystem.
Uniplaces, an online marketplace for student accommodation, and Talkdesk, a cloud-based call centre software provider, are among Lisbon’s successful startups, having raised significant venture capital. The city is also home to a number of tech events, including the Lisbon Investment Summit and Web Summit, which attract international attendees and speakers.
However, challenges persist, including limited access to late-stage funding and a small domestic market. Despite these hurdles, Lisbon’s startup scene continues to thrive, propelled by its strategic location, robust infrastructure, and the entrepreneurial spirit of its residents. The city’s startup ecosystem is expected to grow and mature in the coming years, solidifying Lisbon’s position as a leading European tech hub.
