Ross, an artificially intelligent lawyer, has been hired by its first official law firm, Baker & Hostetler. Ross has been designed to handle bankruptcy cases and is built upon IBM’s cognitive computer, Watson. The AI is capable of understanding language, providing answers to questions, formulating hypotheses and learning from its interactions. Ross can sift through thousands of legal documents in seconds, saving lawyers time and effort. The AI also keeps up-to-date with legal developments, notifying users about recent court decisions that may affect their cases. Ross’s developers aim to have the AI learn over time to continually improve its responses. Baker & Hostetler, which employs around 50 human lawyers, is the first to officially hire Ross, but other firms are also showing interest.
