The UK government is facing criticism for its lack of a digital strategy, which was due to be published in December 2016 but has been delayed. The criticism comes from the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, which has warned that the delay is causing uncertainty and risks the UK losing out on opportunities for economic growth and public service improvement. The committee has called for a digital strategy that includes plans for digital skills, data, cyber security and connectivity. It has also highlighted the need for the government to address the digital skills gap, with over 12 million adults lacking basic digital skills and 5.8 million having never used the internet. The committee’s report also emphasises the importance of improving digital infrastructure, including broadband and mobile coverage. The government has responded, stating that it is committed to addressing these issues and that the digital strategy will be published shortly.
