Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (DAOs) are emerging as a new form of business structure, operating as 3rd Era Organisations (3EOs). DAOs are characterised by their decentralised nature, with no central authority, and are governed by smart contracts on blockchain. They are fluid and adaptive, capable of evolving over time, and are participatory, enabling anyone to contribute and have a say in decisions.
3EOs represent the next stage in organisational evolution, following the 1st Era Organisations (1EOs) – traditional hierarchies, and 2nd Era Organisations (2EOs) – networks. DAOs, as 3EOs, combine the best aspects of 1EOs and 2EOs, including the ability to scale and adapt like networks, while maintaining the purpose and direction of hierarchies.
DAOs can be seen as living organisms, with a focus on growth and evolution, rather than static entities. They are designed to be resilient, capable of withstanding external shocks, and are inherently cooperative, fostering collaboration rather than competition. This new organisational structure has the potential to revolutionise business, creating a more democratic, inclusive, and resilient economy.
