The characterisation of unk unks involves three dimensions: the nature of the unknown, the locus of the unknown, and the response to the unknown. The nature can be either technical or contextual, the locus can be internal or external, and the response can be reactive or proactive.

To better manage unk unks, it’s recommended to adopt a proactive approach, focusing on learning and adapting rather than controlling. This includes fostering a culture of inquiry and open communication, encouraging team members to voice uncertainties and share knowledge.

Additionally, project managers should apply scenario planning and use iterative processes to adapt to changing circumstances. They should also strive to enhance their team’s resilience and agility, enabling them to respond effectively to unk unks as they arise.
