DonotPay, an artificial intelligence (AI) lawyer, has successfully challenged 160,000 parking tickets in London and New York, saving drivers an estimated £3m in fines. Created by 19-year-old British student Joshua Browder, the chatbot uses a series of responses to guide users through the appeal process. Browder, who taught himself to code at age 12, initially developed the bot for personal use after receiving 30 parking tickets.
The free service has a 64% success rate, helping users overturn more than 160,000 of 250,000 parking tickets in just 21 months. Browder plans to expand the service to Seattle next. He also aims to adapt the technology for more complex legal issues, such as asylum applications and HIV disclosure laws.
The bot’s success has raised questions about the future of the legal profession, with some experts suggesting that AI could replace up to 40% of jobs within the next two decades. Browder, however, believes that the technology will supplement rather than replace human lawyers, providing a free and accessible service for those who can’t afford legal advice.
