The Wired Audi Innovation Awards 2016 celebrated the most forward-thinking minds in science, technology, and business. Among the winners were Open Bionics, a start-up that creates affordable 3D-printed bionic hands for amputees, which took the top spot in the Robotics category. The Social Innovation award went to what3words, a global addressing system that assigns unique three-word addresses to every 3m x 3m square in the world, improving location precision.
Scientist Demis Hassabis, co-founder of Google’s DeepMind, won the Innovation in AI award for his work on AlphaGo, an AI system that defeated a world champion at the complex game of Go. The Innovation in Product Design award was given to Kano, a company that produces DIY computer kits for children to learn coding and computer science.
The Innovation in Experience Design award went to The Void, a company that develops immersive virtual reality experiences. Lastly, the Scientific Breakthrough award was given to the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technique, which allows scientists to modify genes within organisms. This groundbreaking technology could potentially revolutionise medicine and agriculture.
