Google’s philanthropic arm, Google.org, is committing $50m over the next two years to support nonprofits that are helping people prepare for the changing nature of work. The funds will be used to research, develop technology and provide services for those affected by the shift in work trends.

The initiative, called the ‘Future of Work’, will focus on three areas: skills and training, connecting job-seekers with positions and supporting low-wage earners. Google.org will fund organisations that use technology and innovation to train workers in new skills, connect job-seekers with positions that match their abilities, and support individuals in low-wage employment to improve their economic prospects.

Google.org has already committed $7.5m to three organisations: Social Finance, Year Up and Bayes Impact. Social Finance will use the funds to study the cost-effectiveness of youth apprenticeship programmes, while Year Up will develop a system to connect young adults with jobs in the tech industry. Bayes Impact, on the other hand, will build a digital service to help job-seekers in France find work.

This initiative is part of Google.org’s ongoing commitment to addressing the global economic and social challenges posed by the rapid advancement of technology.
