IBM and BMW are joining forces to revolutionise the driving experience. They aim to create a new standard for personalised, cognitive mobility with the help of IBM’s Watson artificial intelligence (AI). BMW’s car development team will work closely with IBM’s global team of researchers to explore how Watson can support drivers. The AI system will offer real-time updates regarding the vehicle’s status and environment, as well as personalised recommendations to improve the driving experience.

Four BMW i8 hybrid sports cars have been provided to IBM’s Munich Watson IoT headquarters for testing. This partnership is a part of BMW’s strategy to shift towards being a mobility and tech company. The collaboration aims to bring together the best of both worlds: BMW’s automotive expertise and IBM’s cutting-edge AI research.

Watson’s ability to understand, reason, learn and interact will be utilised to provide drivers with a new level of ‘assist’ features. These could include personalised driving recommendations based on real-time traffic situations, weather forecasts, and the driver’s personal preferences. The ultimate goal is to create a more intuitive, personalised, and safer driving experience.
