Management as we know it could be coming to an end, with a shift towards self-management, wholeness and evolutionary purpose. This concept, known as Teal Organisation, is based on three breakthroughs. First, self-management replaces the traditional hierarchy with a system where everyone is their own boss. Second, wholeness encourages employees to bring their whole selves to work, not just their professional persona. Lastly, evolutionary purpose allows organisations to adapt and change their goals as needed, rather than sticking rigidly to a set plan.

This shift is driven by the increasing complexity of our world, which traditional management structures struggle to cope with. Teal Organisation, by contrast, is more flexible and adaptable. It’s already being used by companies like Buurtzorg, FAVI and Morning Star, who report increased employee satisfaction and productivity. Despite this, some critics argue that it’s too idealistic and difficult to implement on a large scale. Others worry about the lack of clear accountability. Yet, as the world continues to change and evolve, so too must our approach to management.
