IT departments are feeling the pressure to take on a more strategic role in businesses as digital transformation becomes a priority. A study by Progress reveals that 97% of businesses are now embarking on digital transformation projects. IT departments are seen as the key to driving this change, with 86% of respondents believing IT should be a strategic partner and not just a platform provider.

The role of IT is changing, with 69% of respondents saying the department should be facilitating technology adoption throughout the business. Despite this, only 36% of IT departments are involved in customer-facing app development, which is a key part of digital transformation.

The study also suggests a disconnect between IT departments and the rest of the business, with only 25% of respondents believing their company’s software decisions are made by the right people. This suggests a need for better communication and collaboration between IT and other departments.

The study also found that businesses are struggling to find the right technology for their needs, with 65% finding it challenging to choose the right technology to meet their business goals. This underscores the importance of IT departments in guiding businesses through the digital transformation process.
