Jive Software, once a shining star in Portland’s tech scene, is being acquired by an affiliate of Aurea, a Texas-based technology company, for $462m. The deal, expected to close in June 2017, marks the end of an era for Jive, which was among the first companies to develop online collaboration tools for businesses. Despite pioneering the market, Jive struggled to compete with larger rivals like Microsoft and Salesforce. After going public in 2011, the company faced dwindling sales and a falling share price. The acquisition by Aurea is seen as a fresh start for Jive, offering new opportunities for growth. However, it also raises questions about the future of Jive’s 600 employees, including 200 in Portland. The deal also underscores the challenges faced by Portland’s tech sector, which is struggling to produce big, successful companies.
