LinkedIn’s Chief Economist, Karin Kimbrough, observes that the fourth industrial revolution, driven by artificial intelligence (AI), will significantly impact middle-class workers. She notes that while AI will eliminate some jobs, it will also create new ones, requiring workers to adapt and learn new skills.
According to Kimbrough, the jobs most at risk from AI are repetitive, routine tasks that don’t require human judgement. These include truck driving, food service, and retail jobs. On the other hand, jobs that require human judgement, creativity, and emotional intelligence will be more secure.
The impact of AI will be felt most by middle-class workers, who are often in jobs that combine routine tasks with elements of judgement and creativity. Kimbrough suggests that these workers should focus on upskilling and lifelong learning to stay relevant in the changing job market.
She also highlights the role of businesses and governments in supporting workers through this transition. Companies should invest in training programmes, while governments should provide safety nets and incentives for lifelong learning. Kimbrough believes that with the right support and preparation, workers can successfully navigate the AI revolution.
