Capability Mapping

Digital Transformation must be guided by strategic business priorities, principally: what new capabilities do we need and what new talent should we develop?

Digital development is no longer centralised within IT departments, but spread throughout the organisation. We need to map it, understand where our strengths lie and how we can better connect areas of good practice.

How can we identify our digital strengths and gaps that need to be addressed?

A healthy distributed approach to transformation is one where digital is everybody’s job, not a centralised function. So we need to know where our strengths lie, where the gaps are, and how we can connect our emerging digital capabilities to create value for our employees and customers.

Maintaining a live map of digital capabilities, skills and talent helps prioritise change actions, and can also inform hiring, learning and organisational development.

Our capability mapping method looks at the services, skills, tools, systems and data that underpin core digital business capabilities. This helps show the connections, cross-overs and commonalities that can help us get more out of existing digital investments. But it can also illustrate how to develop entirely new capabilities that can drive the organisation forward.

Our talent and skills mapping takes a similar approach by identifying hotspots of good practice, new behaviours and competencies that we can learn from and share more widely, and this can inform hiring and learning processes.
