Sahil Lavingia is the founder and CEO of Gumroad, a platform that empowers creators to sell products directly to consumers. He moved to the US at 18, dropped out of the University of Southern California to join Pinterest as the second employee, and launched Gumroad at 19. Despite initial success, Gumroad faced significant challenges, reducing its workforce from 20 to 5 in 2015. Lavingia, however, remained committed, buying out investors to regain control.
Gumroad’s mission is to help every creator earn a living. They have helped creators earn over $200m, with over $5m paid out monthly. Lavingia believes that the internet has democratised access to audiences, allowing anyone to build a business around their passion.
In addition to Gumroad, Lavingia has invested in over a dozen startups, believing in the power of small teams. He also writes, with his work appearing in Fast Company and Time. His first book, ‘The Minimalist Entrepreneur’, was published in 2021.
Lavingia’s personal philosophy is one of simplicity and minimalism. He believes in focusing on the essential, removing distractions, and being present. He also emphasises the importance of continuous learning and growth.
