Open-Xchange, a German software firm, has launched a new app that merges email, chat, and video communication into a single platform. The app, OX Chat, is an extension of the company’s existing email service, Dovecot. OX Chat aims to challenge the dominance of Slack and Microsoft Teams by offering a unified communication tool that does not require users to switch between different applications.

The app utilises the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), a standard email protocol, to synchronise messages across devices. This allows users to access their emails, chat messages, and video calls from any device connected to the internet. OX Chat also supports end-to-end encryption, ensuring the privacy of users’ communications.

Open-Xchange’s CEO, Rafael Laguna, believes that the app’s integration with email gives it a competitive edge. He argues that email is still a vital communication tool for businesses, despite the rise of chat apps. By combining email with chat and video communication, OX Chat could appeal to businesses looking for a more streamlined communication solution.

The launch of OX Chat is part of Open-Xchange’s broader strategy to diversify its product portfolio and expand its user base. The company plans to offer the app to its existing customers, as well as target new markets.
