HR Tech 2018 highlighted the shift in the learning landscape, with traditional Learning Management Systems (LMS) giving way to Learning Experience Platforms (LXP). These new platforms provide a more personalised, engaging, and efficient learning experience. They offer a Netflix-style interface, driven by artificial intelligence, that recommends learning content based on user behaviour.
LXP’s also support a broader range of content, including articles, podcasts, and videos, and allow users to create and share their own content. As a result, learning becomes more collaborative and social. These platforms also integrate performance support tools, enabling employees to access learning content directly from their workflow.
While LXP’s are gaining popularity, LMS’s are not disappearing. Instead, they are evolving to include features of LXPs, such as personalised content recommendations. However, the focus is shifting from managing learning to enabling learning, with an emphasis on user experience.
The rise of LXPs reflects the changing needs and expectations of the modern workforce. Employees now want continuous learning opportunities that are personalised, relevant, and accessible. They also want to be able to share and collaborate on learning content. Therefore, organisations must adapt their learning strategies to meet these needs and leverage the capabilities of LXPs.
The evolving learning landscape also presents challenges, such as the need for new skills and roles, including learning experience designers and curators. It also requires a shift in mindset from learning as an event to learning as a continuous process.
