European nations vary significantly in their adoption of digital leadership, according to a study by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the management consultancy Korn Ferry. The study analysed over 500,000 leaders in 14 European countries to assess their digital competence. Scandinavian countries, namely Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, were found to be leading the pack, with their leaders displaying a strong understanding of digitalisation and its potential.

In contrast, leaders in Southern and Eastern Europe, including Spain, Italy, and Poland, were less digitally competent. The study also revealed a gender gap in digital leadership, with men scoring higher than women. However, the gap was smaller in countries with higher overall digital competence.

The study suggests that countries with more digitally competent leaders are more likely to succeed in the digital economy. It also emphasises the importance of continuous learning and adaptability in today’s fast-paced digital world. The researchers argue that companies should invest in developing their leaders’ digital skills to stay competitive.

The study’s findings highlight the need for a strategic approach to digital leadership. This includes fostering a culture of learning, promoting gender diversity, and recognising the value of digital skills in leadership roles.
