The Operating System Canvas (OSC) is a powerful tool designed to help organisations understand and improve their operating systems. It encompasses nine key elements: purpose, authority, structure, meetings, information, membership, mastery, compensation, and rules. These elements interact to shape an organisation’s culture, behaviours, and performance.
Purpose is the organisation’s reason for existing and its guiding principle. Authority defines who makes decisions and how they’re made. Structure refers to how work is divided and coordinated. Meetings are the rituals that facilitate collaboration and decision-making. Information is about what data is collected, how it’s used, and who has access to it.
Membership is about who belongs to the organisation and why. Mastery concerns how people learn and grow within the organisation. Compensation is about how people are rewarded for their contributions. Rules are the explicit and implicit norms that govern behaviour.
The OSC is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s a framework to guide discussions and decisions about the operating system. By using the OSC, organisations can gain a holistic view of their operating system, identify strengths and weaknesses, and make informed changes to improve performance.
