Regardless of the organisational structure, power will always concentrate around those with the most influence or knowledge. The primary issue with flat organisations is the lack of clarity in roles and responsibilities, leading to confusion, inefficiency, and frustration.

The lack of a formal hierarchy does not guarantee the absence of an informal one. Instead, it often leads to the emergence of an unregulated, hidden power structure, potentially more damaging than a formal hierarchy. Such structures can foster favouritism, bias, and manipulation, undermining the intended equality of flat organisations.

The solution lies not in abolishing hierarchy altogether, but in creating a healthy hierarchy. This involves clearly defined roles, responsibilities, and power dynamics, with a focus on individual contribution rather than status. A healthy hierarchy promotes transparency and accountability, fostering a more productive and harmonious work environment.

The concept of flat organisations is a flawed one. Instead of trying to eliminate hierarchy, organisations should aim to create a healthy, transparent hierarchy that promotes productivity and equality.
