Volkswagen Group is steering towards a multi-cloud digital transformation, aiming to facilitate innovation, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. The company is collaborating with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft to develop a cloud-based Industrial Cloud platform. This platform will integrate data from all Volkswagen plants, systems, and machines across 122 factories worldwide. The ultimate goal is to create a digital production platform to optimise plant efficiency and quality.

The Industrial Cloud will host all Volkswagen’s applications, including those for supply chain management and production. It will also be open to other companies in the automotive sector, creating an ecosystem for shared innovation. Volkswagen anticipates that this will result in significant cost savings due to increased efficiencies and the ability to leverage economies of scale.

In addition to the Industrial Cloud, Volkswagen is developing a Digital Production Platform (DPP) with Siemens. The DPP will enable real-time data exchange between systems and plants, aiding in decision-making processes. It will also facilitate the integration of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning into production processes.

The digital transformation journey is not without challenges. Volkswagen acknowledges that it must overcome issues related to data security, data ownership, and the standardisation of systems. Nonetheless, the company remains committed to its digital future, with the belief that these initiatives will drive significant business benefits.
