General Electric (GE) is scrapping annual performance reviews and employee ratings, in favour of a mobile app called PD@GE. The app, set to be used by 300,000 employees, will provide real-time feedback from managers and peers. This move is part of a broader trend of companies shifting away from traditional performance reviews. According to GE, the new system will encourage ongoing dialogue, as opposed to the once-a-year conversation.
The app will enable employees to ask for or give feedback at any time. It will also facilitate continuous learning and improvement, fostering a culture of constant development. The app’s features include a ‘Continue’ button for positive feedback and a ‘Consider’ button for areas of improvement.
GE’s decision is based on internal research showing that many employees felt the annual review process was overly time-consuming and did not yield constructive results. The company believes that the new system will save managers’ time and improve overall performance. The aim is to create a more flexible and fluid process that will better serve the needs of the modern workforce.
The move by GE reflects a larger shift in the corporate world. Companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, and Deloitte have also abandoned traditional performance reviews in favour of more frequent feedback systems.
